Dear reader,
It’s been a while. Too long. I’ve been busy with two very young youngsters — and it was all too much. But CPH Weekly is back and here to stay! If it’s your first time: every Wednesday (maybe Thursday), I send out this ultra-brief little round-up for the international Copenhagener. Three or four news stories, three things to do in the coming days. A restaurant or bar tip. Or what-have-you. Enjoy.

Parthenon fragments ours, says DK museum
The National Museum of Denmark said it’s going to hold on to three pieces of the 2,500 year-old Parthenon — rather than returning them to Athens, as requested by Greece. According to Greek paper Kathimerini, the fragments consist of two marble heads and a horse’s hoof and arrived in Denmark between 1688 and 1835. Museum director Dr Rane Willerslev explained: “After careful consideration, they are of greater importance to the National Museum than if they were sent to Greece.” That made me scratch my head a little. Thankfully, Head of Research, Dr Christian Sune Pedersen, chimed in: the three fragments are of “great importance for Danish cultural history and for understanding our interaction with the world around us at a time when democracy was taking shape.” Right, because without them, Denmark would just desend into Viking savagery once more? Or what?
Time to clock in
Danish employees, including office workers, will soon have to clock in and clock out digitally, thanks to new EU rules requiring employees to record their hours. The EU regulation enters Danish legislation this Friday. It’s supposed to prevent unrecorded overtime. Unsurprisingly, the director of the Danish Employers’ Association Martin Steen Kabongo called the rule “annoying”. Businesses complain it will result in more paperwork. The trade union IDA welcomes the law. Charlotte Drachmann, Head of Labor Market Policy, said: “We have to do something about overtime. There is a lot of shadow work that we don't know about, where employees actually work more than they report.” Not sure how this fits with prime minister Mette Fredericksen’s request that Danes pull their boot straps up and “work more”.
Russian hackers at it again
Real estate broker EDC has been targeted by Russian hackers, reports BT. The ransomware group Black Basta made copies of 1,300 people's passports, driver's licenses and health cards freely available online. It’s also published thousands of addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers. EDC is refusing to pay the DKK 41 million ($6 million) ransom. EDC says Black Basta’s earnings help fund Russian war efforts in Ukraine.
Car-share re-shuffle
Local car-share company Green Mobility is stepping up its game after its rival ShareNow announced it would leave the Copenhagen market by the end of next February. Green Mobility plans to get 1,000 more cars on the road by then, roughly the number of vehicles ShareNow will be taking off the streets.
Three things to do
Hit the ice!
Tis the season to freeze and skate: Outdoor ice rinks have been set up at the Copenhagen Zoo, Tivoli, Frederiksberg Runddel and Broens Gadekøkken (that street food area across the harbour from Nyhavn).
Nordic Adventure Film Festival
From November 30 - December 3, Cinemateket hosts the Nordic Adventure Film Festival (NAFF), a celebration of the vertigo-inducing, adrenine-pumping feats of (insane) men and women arond the world. Most films in English or with English subtitles. The info.
Art: The Fantastic Bus
A reason to venture out to Refffen, despite the Arctic temps. Weird delights for adults and kids alike! The Fantastic Bus shows 50-odd illustrations (some 2m wide!) from children’s book author Jakob Martin Strid’s latest book by the same name. Through April 1, 2024. The info.
Food
La tre
I’ve had La Tre Street Kitchen, a tiny Vietnamese joint a block away from Gammeltorv, on my radar for a while. I’d been hoping to score a Banh Mi Mushroom sandwich (DKK 92) stuffed with pickles, chili mayo and coriander. But then temperatures fell to -7 °C. So, for lunch today, I slurped a veggie-noodle-mushroom soup with a boiled eggs (DKK 138) they were advertising as a special. No regrets. The hot, savoury liquid defrosted my limbs before my next frigid bike trip and left me happy and full. If this newsletter awarded stars, La Tre would get 6 out of 5 today.
♥️Thanks for reading♥️
